More information about iPhones ...
Which Internet providers in NZ support the iPhones?
Orcon Internet is the only ISP in NZ that supports iPhones at the present time.
Why can't you use any access provider; why only Orcon Internet?
Orcon Internet access is necessary because every Web page is parsed by the Orcon iPhone server to create touch-sensitive link buttons.
Orcon's iPhone server also finds phone numbers on Web pages, and creates touch buttons for autodialing.
What does Orcon iPhone Internet access cost?
The plans are $20 for 20 hours or $30 for 100 hours, then $1.50 per hr for excess
You can combine your iPhone access and regular Internet access into a single account; then, connect anytime from PC or iPhone.
Why are Orcon's iPhone plans slightly more expensive than regular plans?
Because Orcon has to operate special iPhone servers that render web pages on the small screen of the iPhones, and these servers are very expensive from a software and hardware perspective.
How do iPhones work as regular phones?
Dial normally, or touch a name in your addressbook for autodialing.
Lift the handset to talk, or talk hands-free in speakerphone mode.
Click any phone number on any Web page to dial that number.
Switch to a cordless phone on another extension connected to the same phone line.
How do iPhones do e-mail?
Enter the data for your e-mail provider, then get & send mail from your iPhone.
Continue using your PC for e-mail if you like; no problem switching between devices.
Reply to e-mail or write new e-mail using the pull-out keyboard.
How do iPhones surf the Web?
Click "Internet" to connect, then surf as usual.
Touch links to navigate (it's more intuitive that using a mouse).
Touch phone numbers on Web pages to place calls. (Internet connection seamlessly gives way to the phone call, then you touch "restore" if you want to surf after the call.)
Can the iPhone replace a PC?
YES, if you're only interested in casual Web surfing. You can even attach a printer to get hard copy.
NO, if you use a PC for extensive surfing, word processing, and other substantial PC activities. The iPhone is a much better telephone than any PC, but is best used online for surfing that's related to telephony. For example, use the iPhone when you want to check movie times and then touch-to-dial the theatre; or use it to order books or CD's when your computer isn't handy. Use your PC for extensive research, extended surfing, lengthy e-mail, etc.
